Facebook vs Tesla. Zuckerberg vs Musk.
Two billionaire giants have publicly shown their differences of opinions about the future of artificial intelligence. While Mark Zuckerberg is optimistic about the positive influences AI can contribute in the near future, Elon Musk believes the opposite and recently tweeted that Zuckerberg’s understanding of the subject is “limited.”
With AI’s increasing influence on technology, Musk believes it will inevitably be a threat to humanity. Ironically, AI has begun to show its potential in the automotive industry because of its attention to safety. In the healthcare industry, AI machines can now diagnose patients and provide necessary treatment.
Musk does have a point of how AI can harm society when we consider technology is subject to error at times and can possibly “amplify racist and sexist prejudices, upend society by putting millions out of jobs; set to increase inequality, and how it will be used as tool of control by authoritarian governments.”
In an effort to refute Musk’s skepticism, however, Zuckerberg states:
“I have pretty strong opinions on this. I’m really optimistic. I’m an optimistic person in general. I think you can build things and the world gets better. With AI especially, I’m really optimistic, and I think that people who are naysayers and try to drum up these doomsday scenarios … I don’t understand it. It’s really negative, and in some ways, I actually think it’s pretty irresponsible… Whenever I hear people saying AI is going to hurt people in the future, I think: Yeah, technology can generally always be used for good and bad, and you need to be careful about how you build it, and you need to be careful about what you build and how it’s going to be used.
While they disagree, both sides share an interesting view on AI.
Do you think AI is a threat to our society or one of our greatest hopes?
