Gender discrimination in the world of venture capitalism has been going on for a good long while as recent reports have shown. But now, an increasing number of incidents are coming to light and more women are willing to speak up.
According to data from PitchBook, VCs put $64.9 billion into male-founded startups in 2016 while female-founded startups received only $1.5 billion.
With men controlling the vast majority of venture capital firms, it can be difficult for women to break through. According to one survey, 89% of those making investment decisions at the top 72 VC firms are male.
Between 2011 and 2013, companies with a female CEO received $1.5 billion of the $51 billion venture capital investors poured into those they deemed promising, or a mere 3% of available dollars, the study revealed.
