We have heard about this idea in recent days. But in case you’ve been living under a rock, net neutrality is the protocol or principle whereby internet service providers enable access to all types of content and applications, irrespective of the source. Moreover, ISPs should not have any type of restriction or block against products.
This protocol has received severe criticism from tech companies and there have even been protests against the FCC. However, recently Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg indicated his support for net neutrality protection. He agreed to work in close quarters with members of Congress on the rule.
In one of his posts on Facebook, Zuckerberg wrote that if a service starts charging for access to specific information which was earlier blocked, then it becomes a big pain and there should be guidelines in place against it. He said that he supports the rules established by the FCC, however, he indicated that Facebook is ready to work with Congress to ensure the principle of net neutrality is protected.
Companies like Amazon, Google, Facebook, and Twitter are participating in an online rally to support net neutrality protection. Per the current rule, the internet is an open platform for everyone. While internet service providers are treating all content equally, the new FCC Chairman Ajit Pai emphasized that these protections have gone a bit too far.
