Google is serious about lowering the unemployment rate in the United States and various parts of Europe with a $50 million initiative that aims to aid potential job seekers in being well-prepared for work and also in improving the working conditions of currently employed individuals.
This initiative was launched by Google’s philanthropic arm, Google.org. The organization’s president Jacquelline Fuller announced the new campaign via an official statement in which she states the goal is to “make sure that as many people as possible can make the most of the new jobs, industries and opportunities that are emerging — some of which we couldn’t have imagined just a few years ago.”
The organization’s funds will be sent to groups like Code for America that promote the specialization of education for the younger population. The organization is also funding Social Finance, a non-profit organization that studies the success and cost effectiveness of youth training programs.
As the labor force shrinks, a change to the industry will lead to an increase in globalization and automation. Google.org has pledged to invest $2 million in the research of technology and how it can prepare workers for new jobs and industries. It will be interesting to see what developments may occur to help the current workforce of the United States and other countries be more versatile and well-rounded.
Google.org acknowledges that “more than a third of jobs are likely to require skills that are uncommon in today’s workforce.” Furthermore, the organization reiterates “workers are increasingly working independently [and that the] demographic changes and shifts in labor participation in developed countries will mean future generations will find new ways to sustain economic growth.”
Google.org’s initiative to help develop our current workforce should be applauded. Hopefully, it will leave a positive imprint on the development of our nation’s future and current workers.
