GlaxoSmithKline announced on July 25 that Karenann Terell would join the company as its new Chief Digital & Technology Officer, with anticipation that she can transform how new technologies are used to improve the company’s performance.
Terell will assume this new role on September 4th and will become a member of the corporate executive team. She will be responsible for developing GSK’s digital, data and analytics strategy and will work with a wide range of partners from inside and outside the healthcare sector to bring new technologies to GSK, enhancing areas such as clinical trials and drug development. She will also work to improve how the company interacts with HCPs, customers, and consumers as well as make internal processes more efficient.
Terell was previously the Chief Information Officer for Walmart where she led a multi-year effort to transform Walmart in the use of data, analytics, and digital engagement with its customers.
Emma Walmsley, Chief Executive Officer at GSK, said: “The impact of technology on the healthcare industry is accelerating and requires us to rethink our approach. As a member of the Executive Team, Karenann will have the scope to think radically about how we can exploit the latest opportunities and ultimately improve our business performance.”
Terell has lived and worked in the U.S., Asia, and Europe. Prior to Walmart, she was at Baxter International Inc., where she was Chief Information Officer and before that Daimler Chrysler Corporation. Terell began her career in 1986 at General Motors and held various roles in manufacturing, engineering, and brand management, ending her career there as Director of e-Vehicles. She possesses graduate and post-graduate degrees in Engineering.
GSK’s results are set to benefit once again from a weak pound, after last year’s Brexit vote, as well as strong demand for HIV medicines and the failure so far of generic firms to win approval for U.S. copies of its inhaled lung drug Advair.
