How important is it to retain apprentices in the workforce?
I would say it’s hugely important to retain apprentices in a business.
As a large company we know we have a responsibility to help people to build skills. The apprenticeship scheme was something we introduced nearly four years ago because we wanted to not only help young people into the workplace but to develop their confidence and ability to work.
We found that retention improved with apprenticeships, as over 80% of our apprentice schemes were completed; and they then progressed up the career ladder very quickly.
It is very important to retain apprentices in the workforce. They help young people to be successful and the business to grow great talent.
Are apprentices the solution to the skills shortage?
I think they are a key part of the solution for sure. I am a massive advocate of apprenticeships because you can bring young people into the workforce who haven’t had any work experience or who may be struggling to get onto the career ladder.
We can then help them to build the required skills they need.
