In 2014, Alphabet Inc., was created as the parent company of Google. The main reason for the move was to separate Google’s operations from other passion projects and investments. This split enabled long time Google employee Sundar Pichai to take the reigns as CEO of Google.
Pichai joined Google in 2004 and helped lead the development of key consumer products which are now used by over a billion people around the world. As Google’s Chief Executive Officer, he is not only responsible for Google’s product development and technology strategy, but for the company’s day-to-day-operations.
Pichai, an IIT Kharagpur alumnus born in Chennai, has been leading the company for the past two years. In 2014, he took over product, engineering, and research efforts for all of Google’s products and platforms. Pichai’s current role was announced on August 10, 2015, as part of the restructuring process that made Alphabet into Google’s parent company and he assumed the position on October 2, 2015.
Under him, Google has boosted sales from its core advertising and YouTube business, while also investing in machine learning, hardware, and cloud computing.
“Sundar has been doing a great job as Google’s CEO, driving strong growth, partnerships, and tremendous product innovation. I really enjoy working with him and I am excited that he is joining the Alphabet board,” Larry Page, CEO of Alphabet, said in a statement on Monday.
Alphabet may be a loose collection of companies, but really it’s a holding company for Google with some hobbies on the side. Pichai will become the 13th member of Alphabet’s board and the second Google vote on the board after Diane Greene.
