Senior chief digital and marketing officer, Bertrand Bodson, will be leaving retail company Argos in September in what has been a 4-year stint for him. His departure comes less than a year after Argos’ acquisition by Sainsbury’s, the second largest chain of supermarkets in the United Kingdom. Argos has stated they have no plans for a replacement and the responsibilities of his role will be divided amongst the remaining staff.
Bodson has made a lasting imprint on Argos, as he is the one responsible for the introduction of tablets at its retail stores and has helped the company become the first multichannel English retailer to earn upwards of £1 billion in mobile sales. Amidst his departure, marketing director Gary Kibble and digital director Mark Steel will assume his duties and will focus on the brand’s marketing together. CEO John Rogers has not let Bodson’s impact to the company go unnoticed in his recent statement:
“Bertrand has been instrumental in defining and driving forward our retail digital leadership strategy, leading the digital business which is now 55% of our sales and bringing in new expertise and ways of working including our Fast Track market-beating offer. He has played a key role in bringing Sainsbury’s and Argos together and driving the integration over the past year. I would like to thank him for his outstanding contribution to our business and I wish him every success for the future.”
Bodson will mentor both Gary Kibble and Mark Steel to ensure a smooth transition, but the question remains: Will Argos thrive in their marketing plans without the influential direction of Bertrand Bodson?
