Amid a huge global reorganization of its workforce, Microsoft announced on Thursday that it will lay off thousands of workers.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the U.S. tech giant said, “Microsoft is implementing changes to better serve our customers and partners. Today, we are taking steps to notify some employees that their jobs are under consideration or that their positions will be eliminated. Like all companies, we evaluate our business on a regular basis.”
While an exact number was not given, a person familiar with the matter said it would be in the “thousands.”
According to a Reuters report, most of the job cuts are expected to come from the sales department and will hit workers outside of the U.S. the hardest.
As reported earlier this week, the reorganization comes as the company attempts to place greater focus on artificial intelligence and cloud technology.
