Facebook employees have been implored to stop defacing Black Lives Matter signs within the tech giant’s headquarters, in an internal memo from CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
The slogans appear on internal “walls” designed to mimic the virtual Facebook wall, with staff encouraged to use markers to scrawl on them.
The memo highlights what Zuckerberg calls “unacceptable”, “disrespectful” and “malicious” altering of ‘Black Lives Matter’ slogans written on the walls to read ‘All Lives Matter’.
The Black Lives Matter slogan refers to the activist movement against violence against black people, with the alterations to All Lives Matter labelled by Zuckerberg as “a deeply hurtful and tiresome experience for the black community and really the entire Facebook community”.
“There are specific issues affecting the black community in the United States, coming from a history of oppression and racism. Black lives matter doesn’t mean other lives don’t – it’s simply asking that the black community also achieves the justice they deserve,” he wrote.
