From setting up a small social network at Harvard University to creating a massive technology company that now aims to connect people around a mission, Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook has reached a staggering 2 billion users. With more than a quarter of the world’s population on the social networking site, Facebook has exceeded all expectations of its growth from when it originally started as a way for college students to connect with one another.
Facebook has reached another billion users in only half a decade since its first billion landmark, and although the growth has been exponential, it has even come as a surprise to the company’s VP of growth, Javier Olivan.
Olivan states, “[he] would have thought that the fastest growth would have been at the time where [they] were launching so many languages and making it available for so many people in different countries… but it turns out we’re actually at peak growth now, a few years later.”
Facebook has not magically reached 2 billion users, but instead, it has implemented useful and effective strategies to connect more people around the world. With initiatives like solar-powered drones to increase internet connectivity around the world, Facebook has optimized its strengths and has created more space for growth than ever before.
Mark Zuckerberg believes he is far from meeting his goal of “[making] the world more open and connected” and that reaching 2 billion users is only the start of his journey, however just like the change in Facebook’s slogan, he will aspire to “bring the world closer together.”
