Although Uber has been under fire recently, the company has succeeded in becoming one of the top pioneers in the transportation and ride-sharing industries. Uber riders have helped the company make an impressive 5 billion trips since starting the service in March 2009. Amidst recent criticism, Uber has still thrived to become one of the most well-known ride-sharing apps for individuals around the world.
Uber initially passed 1 billion trips in December 2015, and within six months of that accomplishment, reached 2 billion rides. In one year, the company has more than doubled that astonishing number to a phenomenal 5 billion rides. It is reported that 156 trips were tallied to obtain that number, with trips ranging from Atlanta to Moscow. As a means of celebration, Uber plans to give the drivers of those 156 trips a $500 bonus for playing a part in reaching that historic number.
Although reaching 5 billion trips has shown Uber’s dominance in the ride-sharing industry, the company still suffers consequences from recent incidents that have hurt its image. According to research firm Second Measure, the U.S. market share of Uber fell from 84% at the beginning of 2017 to 77% at the end of May. According to PYMNTS.com, Uber’s competitor, Lyft, experienced a growth period with bookings increasing 135% year over year in April.
Uber should rightfully celebrate this big moment, but must also reflect on its pervasive actions that hurt their customer satisfaction and public image. There has been a decrease in customer preferences to use Uber’s services, and it should focus on making that percentage increase by next year.
