Though it looks like a pretty simple platform with little fuss about image sharing, Instagram has emerged as a tough taskmaster when it comes to tackling and eliminating marketing spam.
Ever since the platform opened for advertising with users (individuals and brands alike) starting to post ads, coupled with a large user base and revenue generating stream, there has been a huge amount of illegal or fake marketing appearing on the platform. So, the world’s best social media platform decided to take things more seriously by eliminating the fake displays produced by marketing bots.
It was observed that third party companies who run this bot technology started commenting on the social media platform. They targeted specific advertisements and left superfluous, yet logical, comments which were either single text or emoji-based. The objective was to get a follow back from a specific user in their demographics.
But Instagram has cracked the whip causing these bot companies to shut down. While that doesn’t mean an end to this “botwave” as more new firms continue to crop up, at least it gives an indication to the new players that they won’t survive for long.
The decision of Instagram is a positive development because fake comments by bots don’t yield customer engagement. It only increased the follower count which does not help companies who are seriously marketing their products and services. Furthermore, the comments made by these bots eventually attract more bot followers than genuine followers. Hence, by taking as many bots as possible to the chopping, Instagram has created a level playing field for real players to market to and earn their customers the right way.
