Yahoo confirmed Thursday information on at least 500 million users has been stolen in a massive cyber breach.
The breach, first reported by Re/Code, was later confirmed by Yahoo’s Chief Information Security Officer Bob Lord.
We have confirmed that a copy of certain user account information was stolen from the company’s network in late 2014 by what it believes is a state-sponsored actor,” Lord said.
The stolen information includes names, email addresses telephone numbers, dates of birth, protected passwords and encrypted and unencrypted security questions and answers. The investigation does not show unprotected passwords, bank information or credit card numbers were stolen, the company said.
The breach – which could be the largest cybercrime ever reported – occurred in late 2014. The hacker is not currently in the company system, Yahoo said.
Earlier reports said the hack was perpetrated by someone who goes by the name “Peace.” The same person is linked to previous hacks of LinkedIn and MySpace.
